Notes

The Modern Classic Weekend was a two day festival in the St. Michael Kirche on the Brüsseler Platz in Köln. The first day featured James Blackshaw, Lubomyr Melnyk and Martin Herzberg. The line-up of the second day consisted of HAUSCHKA, InsaDonjaKai and John Kameel Farah. I only attended the first day and even though all three acts from that night were taped, the recording of Martin Herzberg did not turn out well, so it won't be shared. And frankly his performance was a bit disappointing as well, so you won't be missing much. The night started off with James Blackshaw, immediately after that followed by Lubomy Melnyk without a break in between. So that's why the introduction speech for the latter starts with a "thank you" for the first. After Lubomyr's set there was a short break before Martin Herzberg's set. When I entered the church again after the intermission, I noticed that about half of the audience had not returned.
Both recordings turned out very well, James' set is probably of slightly better quality than Lubomyr's. This is because Lubomyr prefers to play the piano without amplification. Since they had released the album The Watchers together on the Important Records label, I had some hope that there would be some collaborative performance of James and Lubomyr together, but that did not happen.
