Notes

Epic show on a hot June night in North Carolina (not that there's any other kind). This was my first time seeing Fucked Up, and they did not disappoint at all. The band was in great form, especially Damian/Pink Eyes, who worked the crowd like a giant, lovable David Yow. For a band from Canada, they knew a lot about North Carolina, giving shout outs to Rick Flair (pro wrestler from Charlotte), Bojangles' (regional fried chicken chain), Brian Walsby (longtime local cartoonist and musician - formerly of Polvo and Double Negative, amongst other bands), and the Hopscotch Festival (Fucked Up played the inaugural fest last year). They played a number of songs from the new record, a handful of older cuts, and then topped it all off with a smokin' Black Flag cover.

I got a pretty good spot to record, on the right side of the club (stage left), standing on a bench against the wall, about 12 feet from the speakers on that side of the stage. I was above most of the crowd so there's almost no crowd noise. The recording does get a little rough during Running On Nothing because Damian came out in the crowd and wound up standing on the bench right beside me and threw his arm around me at one point. From there, he continued back to the bar and started Magic Word standing on top of the bar about 25 feet from the stage. Other than that spot, I'm pretty pleased with how the recording came out.
