Taper: The Bologna King

Live recordings of my favorite bands was something that I had been into for awhile at this point. But it wasn't until I went to college and got online did I realize that these shows were meant to be traded and not sold at record shows. Then the obsession kicked into full drive. I was, and still am, a huge fan of Henry Rollins. But to my chagrin I was having a hard time finding any spoken word shows outside of the official releases. So as these things go I decided to give this bootlegging thing a try for myself as I was finally getting to attend my first Rollins spoken word show. I figured if I could tape the show it would give me some cool trade bait to lure other Rollins shows into the open.

I did some research and discovered that I had no where near the funds to buy a professional grade Walkman or a MiniDisc recorder. I was a poor college student after all. But I figured that since this was just a guy on stage talking for a few hours, I didn't need anything too fancy. I honestly don't remember where the recorder came from but it was most likely a garage sale or thrift store purchase. It was one of those large models with a built in speaker used for recording meetings and the like. It was an old Panasonic, and not something any reasonable taper would use. I then went to Best Buy the day before the show and got a powered Sony lapel mic for around $12.

It seemed to record well enough in my house but I had no idea how it would work at the show. On top of that I was deathly afraid I would have my recorder taken at the venue and not allowed in. But I was amazed just how easy it was to "smuggle" it in, just having it covered in my coat pocket by my hat. I should point out that my coat had pretty big pockets. :) We sat dead center at the Majestic about 5 rows or so back. It was freezing, the chairs were uncomfortable, and every 40 minutes or so my friends would coax me to flip the tape in the recorder sitting in my lap. Considering how big the recorder was I'm amazed we got away with it. It wasn't until after the show and on the way back home did I realize just how successful my experiment was. Not only was this my first Rollins spoken word show, but it was my first time taping anything. Listening to this reminds me of the excitement I felt at the time and feeling that I had gotten away with something completely awesome. I hope you enjoy this as much as I have over the years.
