Notes

-I heard about Kamasi but had not heard his music until I checked out Youtube about a week before the show - it got my interest level up, but I held out
on deciding to go until several hours before the show when I got the uncontrollable feeling I shouldn't miss it - well I've learned to trust my intution
thankfully and was rewarded with this wonderful show. I had to wait on line to buy a ticket but while I did I met a couple that had seen Mingus in the
mid-60's and Mary had seen Charlie the Bird Parker when she was in college in LA! Like wow I'm floored already and then they tell me the ticket price
dropped to $20 for GA! Yes!!! Got in right before he started too, so great timing and got a nice spot. The show was amazing: Kamasi reminds me of Pharoah
Sanders more than anyone else and Brandon sounds like George Duke on keys! Tony, who's played with Charles Lloyd, was great in combo with Kamasi's boyhood
pal Ronald on duel drums though a 17:00 drum solo is pushing it even with two cats. Patrice's vocals are classic female jazz - about half the songs had
some vocals. Then the special treat of the night was Kamasi's father showing up to guest in "Henrietta, Our Hero" - a song written by Kamasi about his
grandmother and his dad's mom. Ricky stayed the rest of the show! Best jazz show in jazz-starved Tucson in quite some time imo!
-the place was pretty full - they split the floor in half with seating on right side for $15 extra and GA on left standing - I went for GA so I could get
and I ended up about 20 heads out under left stack! Sound is real nice!!! "A-"!
-this was part of the Tucson Jazz Festival - I believe it was opening night actually. There's a PDF file attached of page in program on this show. Also,
this link has great article/interview with Kamasi: http://www.tucsonweekly.com/tucson/the-self-evidence-of-kamasi-washington/Content?oid=7371753
